These cups depict the famous "Ocean Water Cliff (海水江崖纹), an ancient symbol that was typically embroidered on the robes of the Emperor of China.  They symbolize the unifying strength of the Emperor, who acted as ruler, unifier, and benevolent caretaker of the the middle kingdom.
